About the presenter

Doug Surtees

Doug Surtees (BBA ’11) is a corporate recruiter with many years of experience hiring for companies in the finance, healthcare and engineering industries. He has a Bachelor of Business Administration from the University of the Fraser Valley and a Diploma in Immigration Consulting from Ashton College.

After graduating from UFV, Doug got his foot in the door to the world of hiring when he was hired at a recruiting agency as a junior member. After finding success in matching skilled and unskilled workers to positions in tough to fill vacancies, he was identified as a top performer at his firm and began to lead and train new recruitment professionals. After a few years in the fast paced world of agency recruitment, Doug transitioned to becoming an internal recruiter for established companies where he could contribute to more comprehensive talent attraction strategies and gain an understanding of the internal mechanics of how companies really hire. Navigating the extreme talent shortages in certain healthcare fields, he began pursuing talent internationally to fill critical vacancies that could not be met by the domestic talent pool. This led him to obtain an education in immigration consulting so that he might advise employers on the global talent market, and how to access it. He now recruits full-time for Allnorth Consulting, an engineering firm based in Kelowna, BC.

Over his career, Doug has interviewed hundreds of candidates with dozens of hiring managers in companies of varying sizes. He has insight into how and why companies advertise the roles the way they do and what happens behind the scenes before and after you apply. Hiring platforms, company structure, industry, talent pool and demographics all play a role in the changing landscape of recruitment. His experience as a headhunter, in-house recruiter, career coach, immigration advisor and recruitment marketer give him strong insight into the evolving ways in which companies build their teams.

Registration closes at noon on August 10th.
