NCRA award an empowering experience for volunteer Cameron Hauck

Cameron (Cam) Hauck (TASK ’06) always aims to do the best possible job. He takes a lot of pride in his volunteer work at CIVL radio station, and his efforts are being noticed.

In June, Cam had the opportunity to fly east for the National Community Radio Association (NCRA) awards. He didn’t know it when he went, but he was going to receive the Volunteer of the Year award. The experience left Cam both humbled and awestruck.

Cam has been volunteering with CIVL radio for almost three years. He was recruited by the station’s executive director, Aaron Levy, who invited Cam to speak about sports on one of his shows; And since then, Cam has found a home at CIVL.

Though nervous at first, Cam quickly learned how to present himself on air, record promos, and manage the sound board. He now regularly operates the board for several of CIVL’s live shows. And, just over a year ago, Cam worked up the confidence to begin the Cam the Man show, his own section of live air.

Cam didn’t do it alone. He had the support of CIVL staff, including Levy and Teryn Midzain (BA ’23).

“I had Aaron sitting in this chair here,” says Cam, recalling the show’s debut. “And then a few moments later, I had Teryn sitting on the guest couch.  I discussed my top ten NFL draft winners for the NFL draft, and it was quite fun — it was a good show.”

For Cam, his time at CIVL has been empowering. It’s helped him grow as a person and as a professional.

“Aaron always wants the best for me,” says Cam. “He pushes me to be the best. I’m grateful for having supportive friends like Aaron and Teryn and a supportive family that push me to do this, because it’s so worth doing.”

Speaking of the awards night, Cam said, “Aaron had to check on me to make sure I was okay. Like, he thought I was crying because I was upset. I told him no–these are happy tears. All my all my hard work has paid off.”

Since being recognized with the award, his confidence has been boosted even more. During his trip he had the opportunity to meet other radio station hosts and staff. He even got to tour the studio at 89.7 FM The Coast in Cape Breton, Nova Scotia. And now he is hosting the Jam in Jubilee radio show — a live series covering local live concerts.

“It has been different for me the past couple weeks since winning the award – in a good way” says Cam. “There’s a little more pep in my step when I’m walking and there’s a and there’s more confidence in me and in the studio.

“I’m volunteer of the year, I can do this. And it’s not just for this campus. It’s for across Canada. I’m the best out of hundreds of radio stations and thousands of volunteers. That’s unbelievable.”

You can listen to the Cam the Man show on the air every Tuesday from 11 am– 1 pm on 101.7 FM, CIVL Radio. And if you want to chat with him live, he’s always happy to take callers.
